While the following are common signs of hemorrhoids and bleeding hemorrhoids symptoms, it is important to check with your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment program – especially if rectal bleeding is a symptom of your condition. If you are over the age of 50 and are experiencing rectal bleeding, please see your doctor to confirm a diagnosis of bleeding hemorrhoids before self treating at home as this may be a sign of a more serious condition.

Common hemorrhoid and bleeding hemorrhoids symptoms:

General common bleeding hemorrhoid symptoms include bowel movements that involve rectal pain, bright red bleeding, and itching.

External hemorrhoids – Another common symptom of external hemorrhoids is rectal pain. Also, blood may collect under the skin and form a hard lump that is painful. This is called a clotted hemorrhoid.

There may also be bright red blood streaked on toilet paper when wiping.

Internal hemorrhoids -  Rectal bleeding is the most common sign. There may also be bright red streaks on the toilet paper as well as in the toilet bowl. Often there may be blood on the surface of the stool.

Some other internal and internal bleeding hemorrhoids symptoms may also include rectal itching, skin irritation, the urge to pass stool even just after having a bowel movement.

While most small internal hemorrhoids are not painful and clear up with little treatment, some may be quite large and bulge through the anus. This may cause them to be squeezed by the muscles that control the opening and the closing of the anus. This squeezing can cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid and cause severe pain. When this happens it may be a sign of a strangulated hemorrhoid and warrants urgent, emergency medical treatment.

Again, it is imperative that any rectal bleeding be diagnosed by a physician unless you are sure it’s source is internal or external hemorrhoids.
