What causes canker sores? This is one simple question with no simple answers. The fact is the difficulty in the treatment of canker sores relies heavily on the difficulty in determining its cause. There can be a myriad of causes for it.
Unlike cold sores that are traceable to bacteria and virus infection, the causes for canker sores are still undetermined. The occurrence of sores inside the mouth, however, is associated with a weak immune system. This means that when an individual has a weak immune system, he is at greater risk for this condition.
Although the causes for canker sores are still vague and hard to determine, its triggers are easily identifiable. This can be one factor, or a combination of factors that come into play given the deficiency in the body’s immune system.
These risk factors are the following:
• Stress. An individual who is stressed is most likely to suffer from canker sores. In fact several studies have proven the relationship between stress and canker sores. It was found from these studies that canker sores appeared on individuals who are under stress at the time the sores manifested.
• Lack of Nutrients in the Body. When the body lacks the necessary nutrients, it becomes more prone to canker sores. The body needs adequate nutrients such as Vitamins B and C and minerals like zinc, iron, calcium, selenium, and folic acid to strengthen the armor against canker sores.
• Use of Products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Oral hygiene products such as toothpaste and mouthwashes may contain SLS as this is what enables these products to foam. However, SLS can cause dryness of the mouth and can trigger canker sores. Use products that are free from SLS to avoid the risks of getting canker sores.
There are several other factors that trigger canker sores such as allergic reactions to certain foods, hormonal imbalance, and genetics. By knowing what trigger your sore, you can apply the right remedy that is safe and effective.
